About Shelly Horman, LMT

I graduated first in my class from Boulder College of Massage Therapy’s 800-hr Massage Therapy Certification Program in 2013. Since becoming a licensed massage therapist, I have advanced my practice through supplementary trainings, including CranioSacral Therapy I & II and SomatoEmotional Release I at the Upledger Institute, as well as training and significant experience in intraoral massage, manual lymph drainage and Reiki I & II.

After more than a decade working as a licensed massage therapist and advancing my practice through these trainings, I am more excited about massage, bodywork and releasing trauma somatically than ever.

Whether through accidents, illnesses or injuries that affect the physical body, which can lead to mental and emotional distress and/or due to adverse relational and emotional experiences, which can lead to physical pain and even chronic health conditions, we all carry trauma in our bodies. Because trauma affects the nervous system and is stored in the body, it needs to be released through the body—which advanced massage therapy can help do.

I provide intentional, intuitive and informed support for whole body healing, which we’re all in need of, and know both personally and professionally that high-level massage therapy, as well as supplementary forms of bodywork, can expedite both the physical and emotional healing processes and lead to significant, sustained results.

Working With Shelly Horman…

I am a strong believer in holistic healing. Just as we’re all interconnected, so are our individual bodies, minds and heart spaces; however, most Western treatment models compartmentalize the physical body and treat specific symptoms rather than treating the whole person. Symptoms are just that—symptoms. They are physical responses to unexpressed and/or unresolved emotional or physical tension and trauma that manifests through pain points and illness in the body. Rather than focusing on the micro (specific, compartmentalized symptoms), taking a macro (whole body healing) approach very often achieves surprising results that mitigate and even alleviate mental, emotional and physical pain.

I take both a short and long-term approach to healing, depending on your personal needs, therapy goals and history. After learning a bit about you, I work in the present-moment, providing you with a safe and trusting space, while addressing both current physical pain and any mental and/or emotional distress that is coming up for you that day. Clients who get the most benefits from working with me understand and/or are interested in a holistic approach to healing. Highly experienced and intuitive, I am able to read the body, which leads me to specific areas in which tension is calling to be released. That said, I am highly respectful of all client needs and goals, and we work at a pace that feels comfortable for you. And, if you’re looking for a deep, get into and focus on the pain points massage, we can do that, too!

As an advanced practitioner, I am skilled at accessing and reading the body, working on the areas that are causing pain and discomfort and identifying any places in the body that are stuck or stagnant and blocking progress. Over the years I have worked closely with veterans experiencing PTSD, women who have experienced sexual trauma, medical trauma and other issues related to the body, and many people with childhood trauma that has been carried into and exasperated in adulthood. I also have done a lot of work with people of all ages recovering from illness, injury, surgery and more. I also provide a variety of bodywork services not often offered by your average massage therapist, which can be integrated into a massage or used solely in a session.

These include:

CranioSacral Therapy: A hands-on, noninvasive, highly effective approach that uses gentle touch to release tension held deep in the body through relaxing the nervous system. A highly sought out form of bodywork, craniosacral is often used to treat a variety of mental, emotional and physical health ailments. Learn more about CranioSacral Therapy here.

SomatoEmotional Release: Sometimes referred to as a form of “body psychotherapy,” SomatoEmotional Release focuses on the release of emotional energy, trauma and tension that was not expressed/released at the time it was generated. Almost—if not all—of us are walking around with unresolved traumas that very often manifest physically. This highly effective form of therapy targets uncomfortable emotion trapped in the body, releasing or redirecting it so clients experience a whole-body, holistic release.

TMJ Treatment & IntraOral Massage: This extremely popular massage relieves tension, trauma and tightness in the jaw and surrounding areas. Intraoral massage helps loosen the facial fascia, not accessible externally, and helps relieve and treat TMJ and related symptoms, such as headaches (especially upon waking), teeth grinding, jaw clenching and/or clicking or popping. For more information, see Victoria’s post on Relieve Jaw, Facial and Neck Pain with Intraoral Massage.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage: This light pressure massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, relieves edema and swelling that can occur when medical treatment or illness affects the lymphatic system by gently manipulating specific areas of the body to help move lymph fluid to an area with working lymph vessels. This is a highly effective form of massage therapy that benefits anyone whose lymphatic system has been compromised from surgery, illness or injury.

A Little More On Shelly…

Outside of my work as a massage therapist, I love to make things. From cooking and baking to leatherwork and knitting, expressing my creativity is important and feels healing for me. I also love to sing, hike, collect crystals and do tarot card readings for fun. I recently moved back to Boulder after time spent in Oregon, and I am so excited to be home!

Over more than a decade providing advanced massage therapies and having experienced both physical and emotional trauma, I’ve learned both professionally and personally that when we experience an energetic and physical release of tension and trauma, the results can be significant and lead to increased enjoyment in all aspects of life. It’s my passion and purpose to assist you in your personal healing journey and help you achieve the results you are seeking.

If you’re experiencing physical, mental and/or emotional discomfort, massage therapy can be extremely effective, especially when working with an advanced massage practitioner. I invite you to call me at 720-532-3660 with any questions and/or to schedule a massage today and take the next step toward feeling better in your body and experiencing more joy, peace and relaxation in all aspects of your life.
